An accurate tripmeter is an essential tool for any rally navigator. Most odometers fitted to cars will be at least 10% in error, so on an event where you need to know exactly how far you have travelled, it would be impossible to check your distance correctly without a supplementary trip. There is a large selection of tripmeters available for today's rallyists ranging from simple single distance readouts to highly complex multi-readout, multi-function machines that apart from actual distances can measure average and maximum speeds, 0-60mph time and fuel consumption. Most classic motorsport events have restrictions as to the type of tripmeter you are permitted to use, with various penalties applying dependent upon the complexity of the relevant tripmeter. Generally speaking, the more functions that a tripmeter performs, the greater the penalty that will be applied. On many events, a tripmeter that can indicate an average speed is not permitted; nor would it be permissable to have distance readouts that can be calibrated independently.
